BeHaviour corner

Behaviour is communication.

Dogs don't "act out" without reason - they respond to stress, learning history. environment, genetics, and unmet needs.

At Willowhound, behaviour support focuses on understanding the why, not just stopping the behaviour you see on the surface.

Adult Dog Training & Behaviour Support

For adult dogs who need help with everyday training, real-world skills, or common behaviour challenges.

Whether you're refining foundations or working through behaviours like reactivity, fear, or impulse control, this space focuses on practical training that improves daily life, not just commands in a quiet room.

Support Includes:

  • Loose lead walking
  • Recall foundations and reliablity
  • Engagement around distractions
  • Calm behaviour in public spaces
  • Settling at home and in new environments
  • Building confidence and focus

And support for common behaviour challenges many owners face.

Common Behaviour Challenges

Reactivity

Barking, lunging, freezing, or over-reacting to dogs, people, bikes, or movement.

Training focuses on:

  • Reducing emotional overload
  • Improving focus and responsiveness
  • Teaching alternative behaviours
  • Giving you clear handling strategies

Impulse Control & Over-Arousal

For dogs who struggle to pause, think, or settle.

Includes:

  • Pulling on lead
  • Jumping up
  • Difficulty disengaging from triggers
  • Struggling to settle at home

Training helps dogs learn how to regulate themselves, not just burn energy.

Fear and Confidence Building

For dogs who are unsure, sensitive, or easily overwhelmed.

This may look like:

  • Hesitation on walks
  • Avoidance of people or environments
  • Startle responses or shutdown

Work centres on building confidence safely and gradually, without forcing dogs into situations they're not ready for.

How training is approached:

Training at Willowhound is:

  • Clear and structured
  • Fair to the dog
  • Practical for everyday life

I focus on understanding why behaviours happen, teaching skills that transfer outside the training session and supporting both dog and you with simple, effective strategies.

No one-size-fits-all programs.

Plans are adapted based on your dog, your goals, and your lifestyle.

Who This Is For

  • Adult dogs past the puppy stage
  • Rescue or rehomed dogs
  • Dogs who "know the basics" but struggle in real life
  • Owners wanting guidance without judgement

You don't need a "serious problem" to reach out - many clients simply want better walks, better focus, and better communication.

What Sessions Look Like

Sessions may include:

  • One-on-one training
  • Real-world setups (walks, public spaces, home environments)
  • Clear homework and follow-up guidance
  • Ongoing support where needed

Not Sure Where You Fit?

If you're unsure whether your dog needs general training or more behaviour support, we can work that out together during an initial consult.

Simply fill out the intake form and I'll be in touch to recommend a suitable training or behaviour support option.

Behaviour and training services are training-based and to not replace advice from a veterinarian or veterinary behaviourist.
