Helping your dog find calm and independence
Does your dog struggle to switch off without you?
Maybe they follow you from room to room, monitor every movement towards the door, struggle to settle independently or become distressed when left alone.
At Willowhound Dog Training in Sydney, I look at what is driving these behaviours and help your dog develop greater confidence, independence and the ability to cope without constant access to you.
Separation, Anxiety & Independence Challenges I can help with:
These behaviours can have several contributing factors, which is why I look beyond the behaviour you see on the surface. Daily routines, reinforcement patterns, arousal, environmental monitoring, previous learning and opportunities to practise independence can all influence how well your dog learns to settle and cope without you.
Struggling When Left Alone
I support dogs who struggle when left alone, whether that looks like barking or howling, pacing, destructive behaviour, reacting to departure cues or simply being unable to settle without you. Training focuses on gradually building independence and helping your dog develop the skills to cope more comfortably with time alone.
No Such Thing as Personal Space
It can be exhausting feeling like you can’t move around your own home without your dog immediately getting up to follow you. They trail you from room to room, watch doors and windows, track your every movement or seem unable to properly rest unless you’re sitting still. I help them build greater independence and learn that they don’t need to keep track of everything you do.
Can’t Switch Off Without You
Your dog is clearly tired, but somehow just can’t stop. They might pace, repeatedly change resting spots, get up whenever you move, follow you from room to room, pant excessively, scan or monitor everything happening around them, seek constant attention, struggle to lie still or reposition themselves over and over. Even when they finally lie down, they can seem like they’re still “on”, waiting for the next movement, sound or activity. I help them develop the skills and routines needed to properly switch off, rest and settle more independently.
Looking beyond the symptoms to find real relief
Rather than focusing only on the behaviours you can see, I look at what may be keeping your dog in a heightened state of arousal. By addressing daily routines, environmental triggers, reinforcement patterns, opportunities for genuine rest and gradual exposure to manageable challenges, we can build stronger coping skills and greater emotional resilience.
How We Build Independence Together
Every plan is tailored to the individual dog and the patterns maintaining their behaviour. We work on reducing hypervigilance, building independence around everyday routines, developing healthier responses to departure cues and teaching dogs how to settle without constantly relying on their owner for reassurance or interaction.
Regain peace of mind in your daily life
Imagine being able to leave home without worrying about how your dog will cope, or simply moving into another room while they remain comfortably settled. We build predictable routines, stronger coping skills and genuine independence so your dog becomes increasingly comfortable resting, disengaging and spending time without constant access to you.
