Strong Foundations for Real Life

Puppyhood is exciting, messy and full of learning for both of you. As your puppy grows, biting, jumping, pulling on lead, selective hearing, difficulty settling, destructive chewing and struggles with independence can quickly become part of everyday life. At Willowhound Dog Training in Sydney, I help you understand what your puppy needs at each stage and build the confidence, communication and practical skills that make life together easier.

More Than Sit, Stay & Come

Good early training makes everyday life easier as your puppy grows, helping them become more confident, adaptable and able to cope with the world around them. We build practical skills including settling independently, coming when called, walking on lead, engaging with you around distractions, handling frustration and navigating new environments.

Learning to Settle & Handle Frustration

Success looks like a puppy who can settle while you cook or work, stay relaxed when you move around the house and comfortably rest without constantly following or demanding attention. You can make dinner, answer a work call or simply sit down for a moment without feeling like your puppy needs to be managed every second.

Coming Back When It Matters

Build a puppy who genuinely wants to engage with you. I use play, movement, food, exploration and shared experiences to make interaction with you rewarding, while teaching your puppy to check in, respond when called and come away from distractions. Over time, these everyday moments build stronger communication, trust and a relationship your puppy actively chooses to return to.

Calm Around Other Dogs

Help your puppy learn how to navigate the social world appropriately. This includes reading and responding to other dogs’ body language, respecting boundaries, developing appropriate play skills, moving away when interactions become too much, staying neutral when interaction is not appropriate and learning that seeing another dog or person does not automatically mean they need to say hello.

Thoughtful socialisation matters

Socialisation is often misunderstood as meeting as many people and dogs as possible. Good socialisation is much broader. Your puppy needs opportunities to observe, explore, play appropriately, experience different environments, read social cues, disengage and simply exist around people and dogs without always interacting. These experiences should happen at a pace your puppy can comfortably process, with plenty of opportunity to pause, recover and take things in. There is no benefit in rushing exposure simply to tick experiences off a list. These varied experiences help build confidence, adaptability and more appropriate responses to the world as your puppy grows.

Everyday Skills at Home

Home should gradually start to feel easier for both of you. We work on toilet training, puppy biting, settling on a bed or in a crate, appropriate play, handling, household boundaries and independence, so you can enjoy your puppy without feeling like every waking moment needs supervision or management. Training is adapted to your puppy’s age and development, helping everyday routines become calmer and more predictable as they grow.

Give Your Puppy a Strong Start

Puppy training is tailored to your puppy, your household and the life you want to share together. We can work on toilet training and building a reliable routine, redirecting biting into appropriate play, settling calmly on a bed or in a crate, spending time independently, coming back when called, walking without constant pulling, handling and grooming, appropriate play with other dogs, staying neutral when greetings are not appropriate and confidently exploring new environments.

You’ll also learn how to read your puppy’s body language, use play and reinforcement effectively, set clear boundaries and adapt your training as your puppy grows.
